Gun Fit
Ian Coley, MBE : “I see gunfitting as an often-forgotten necessity. It is quite surprising how many people have never been fitted with a gun and, truly, the end result is that you cannot shoot your best unless your gun fits you.”

Gun Fitting at Ian Coley Sporting
We offer comprehensive support throughout the entire process. Whether you are considering a new gun and would like to explore our demonstration models, or you already have a preferred manufacturer in mind, we can guide you through every stage of the custom stock process.
If you already own a gun and are seeking adjustments or refinements, we are equally equipped to assist with tailored modifications to meet your specific requirements.
Dimensions that are measured during the Gun Fit include:
- Length & Cast of the Stock
- Comb Height
- Trigger Pull Distance
- Radius of the Grip
- Pitch of the Stock
The Process
Step One - Initial Assessment

The initial shotgun fit is assessed by mounting the shotgun into the shoulder within the shop. During this process, any dimensions that do not align well with the shooter are identified. Adjustments are then made, whether using a try gun or the shooter’s own shotgun. The gun fitter will evaluate the overall fit through repeated mounting, ensuring the shotgun aligns correctly and comfortably with the shooter’s stance and posture.
Step Two - The Pattern Plate

Once the adjustments appear comfortable, the shotgun can be tested on the pattern plate. Based on the results observed, further refinements may be made. If the pattern plate confirms a satisfactory fit, the next step is to move onto a shooting stand. At this stage, engaging with a variety of targets, the most natural and accurate assessment of the gun fit can be made. We have 25+ sporting practice stands available including two high towers & a grouse layout (available on request).
Step 3 - Finalising Measurements
Following the practical element of the gun fitting, you will be provided with a detailed set of measurements. From this point, you have several options:
- Adjust your existing shotgun
- using these measurements, either through one of our recommended gunsmiths or your own trusted specialist.
- Explore the possibility of a new shotgun
- that either aligns more closely with your measurements or requires minimal adjustment to achieve the ideal fit.
- Commission a fully custom stock
- either directly from the manufacturer or through an independent stock maker, tailored precisely to your specifications.
Step 4 - Practice Makes Perfect!
Finally, once a new or adjusted gun is returned from the gunsmith, it is important to try it out again. Spending time on the pattern plate and practising over a variety of targets is an excellent way to familiarise yourself with the new gun fit. While the pattern plate is useful for occasional checks, consistent target practice is key to understanding how the fit performs out in the field or on the clay circuit.
