NITH VALLEY SPORTING
About Nith Valley Sporting
Situated in the beautiful Nith Valley near Dumfries in south-west Scotland, Nith Valley Sporting combines the renowned Newlands and Dalswinton Estates to offer more than 5,000 acres of exceptional driven shooting.
Managed by SM Nith Valley Sporting under the experienced leadership of Grant Leyman and his dedicated team, the shoot enjoys a long-standing reputation for quality sport, outstanding hospitality and meticulous estate management.
Owned by the Landale and Duncan families for over a century, the estates operated independently until 2008, when they were brought together to create a single sporting enterprise. This successful partnership has enabled a broader range of drives, varied terrain and an enhanced shooting experience, making Nith Valley Sporting one of Scotland’s most attractive low-ground destinations.
While pheasants form the cornerstone of the shoot, a number of partridges are also reared, providing dedicated partridge days in early October before the season moves into mixed pheasant and partridge shooting. Days are generally tailored to bags of between 150 and 400 birds, comfortably accommodating teams of six to nine guns.
The majority of drives are set within mature woodland, complemented by carefully managed game crops and cover. The estate’s natural contours, steep banks and rolling topography combine to create challenging and memorable sporting opportunities. Signature drives such as Pedro’s, Fern Hill, The Quarry, Heavy Metal, Middle Hill and Birrell’s Wood are renowned for producing fast, high birds that test even the most accomplished Shot and leave lasting memories long after the day has ended.
The day begins at Newlands House, where guests are welcomed with tea and coffee before heading to the field. Lunch is typically served back at the house, although in favourable weather it may be enjoyed at one of the estate’s well-positioned lunch huts overlooking the surrounding countryside. Following the final drive, teams return to Newlands House for afternoon tea before departure, with a brace of oven-ready birds included as a fitting conclusion to the day. Elevenses, lunch, refreshments and afternoon tea all form part of the complete Nith Valley Sporting experience.
Combining varied and challenging shooting, magnificent scenery and warm Scottish hospitality, Nith Valley Sporting offers memorable days in the field that continue to attract discerning teams year after year.
